Winter Solstice

My dear friends in the Southern Hemisphere … I know it’s summer solstice for you. Enjoy your Christmas holidays at the beach and spare a kindly thought for those of us hanging out in the cold at the other end of the world. We’ll do the same for you in June.

This year has been hard. Even though winter solstice and the holidays around it are usually among my favorite times of the year, I’ve been having trouble this year keeping myself on an even keel emotionally.

So today, I won’t offer any interpretations of what is going on in the sky. I’ll take a walk outside in the thin winter sunshine. I’ll handle errands and cooking and pet my dogs and cat, and I’ll think with fondness of friends who are far away.

I’ll read a book. I may take a nap.

I will bid you all a good solstice, and I’ll be back tomorrow with something new.
