Full Moon in the Shadow of Mercury Retrograde

December 13, 2016 By AstroKate

Today marks the Cold Moon, the full moon nearest the winter solstice. This is the third and last super moon of 2016.

This full moon is exact at 7:06 PM Eastern time (UTC: 12:06 am December 14) and occurs at 22 Gemini.

Gemini is ruled by Mercury, and this Gemini full moon occurs during the shadow period leading up to next Monday’s Mercury retrograde, making for a very interesting setup indeed.

All full moons are, by definition, Moon (your potential) opposite Sun (ego, self, conscious mind). The potential of the Moon is completely illuminated by the drive and ambition of the Sun’s fire. At the full Moon, any plans you made at the new Moon come to fruition.

Because the Moon also represents emotions, a full Moon indicates strong feelings, which could be positive or negative. With the Moon in playful Gemini, a good way to handle increased emotions tonight would be to plan on doing something fun. Go out with friends. See a movie. Go dancing!

And Mercury? Mercury is slowing down, coming to a stationary point conjoining Pluto in Capricorn on Monday the 19th, prior to turning retrograde. Mercury (logic and the mind, communication, messenger of the gods) conjunct Pluto (deep transformation) suggests that this Moon, so close to the winter solstice, the darkest part of the year, is time to give a lot of thought to how things have changed for you, and where you want to go from here.

Gemini represents the mind, thinking, and learning. Sagittarius, where the Sun is currently holding court, is about the higher mind and deeper learning (think university-level subjects). Mercury conjunct Pluto in Capricorn (business, ambition, accomplishments) suggests using this transit for a year-end review.

  • How is your business going right now?
  • What did you learn this year?
  • What was the best thing you experienced?
  • What do you want to do next year?
  • Is there some subject you need to study in order to get ahead of your competition?
  • Where do Gemini (Full Moon) and Capricorn (Mercury stationing retrograde) fall in your chart, and what does that tell you about where you need to focus your energies??

If you need some guidance, a little help to figure out what the planetary patterns are telling you, I would adore helping out. Grab a Mercury Retrograde Survival Kit and in the “Question” box, note that you are interested in what the Full Moon is telling you as well as what the retrograde can teach you.

Here’s to a productive Full Moon and an easy and graceful Mercury retrograde.
